Following Through is Easy – Making Excuses is Harder

Making a commitment to quiet the mind.

Like many people who follow my work you probably find my ideas interesting and think there is some validity in student and client feedback about my simple, proven and trusted Performance Practice to quieten the mind, regulate the breathing and develop relaxed power.

And this is where it stops.

You’d like to change your routine but don’t follow through.

You get how quieting your mind will help raise your performance levels but you can’t commit to 20 minutes in the morning to make this a reality.

Or maybe you’ve tried but didn’t see results quickly enough or found it difficult or boring or you fell asleep doing your meditation or you’d rather organise your sock drawer?

Whatever excuse you’re making – and I think I’ve heard them all over the past three decades of teaching – I’m here to tell you that following through every day is a lot easier than you think.

What’s harder is the bargaining, procrastination and excuses you make, all the reasons your mind can come up with about why it’s not for you, it won’t make any difference, you’re not cut out for this, you can do just as well using your mindfulness app, or you know this stuff already.

But what if you decided to commit, to find out how quieting the mind is a power not a soft-skill, and let nothing stop you or take you off course?

What if you decided to meditate or practice breathing awareness or strengthen your mind-body connection using centuries-old methods for 20 minutes every morning; and you did this religiously before checking your phone or logging on? How much better do you think you’d feel in a week, a month, a year, five years? How much higher would your performance levels be? How much more clarity and inner quietude would you have from which to make important decisions or complete outstanding projects?

What if you went even further and sought my help on putting together your own bespoke routine and we tailored your Performance Practice to the very activity – business, sport, performance – where you’re looking to be better under pressure?

Your quiet mind is like base camp from where you set out on your journey every day; but only when you commit to making this a reality. Otherwise, where are you starting from – yesterday’s ideas, ingrained habits, noise and distraction?

I come from a traditional background in the martial arts where we train every day, no matter what, and I’ve embraced this, no matter what, since the late 1980’s – that’s a long time, a lot of experience, and hundreds of students who’ve got better at golf or tennis or experienced peak performance in front of a live audience or showed up in a more energised way to meetings by getting quiet and uncovering higher forms of intelligence (higher, not artificial) like insight, intuition and revelation.

Once you’re on the way you’ll find out why every day practice is easier than doing this work now and then; you’ll discover how the mainstream narrative does not have your best interests at heart, how generic coaching cannot help you reach your potential and why the mental game is pre-framed in a way that becomes information rather than process-driven.

Peak performance is all about quieting the mind, not listening to its excuses; switching it off for a short time every day, making quiet your ground of being, and setting out each morning having this as the basis from which to operate.

You can thank me later, but the sooner you get on with this the better.

When would NOW be a good time to start?
